Queenslanders, you’re about to be hit with school holidays. Regardless of whether you’re staying home or planning a trip away, the weather is perfect for outdoor expeditions and family fun. Hit the beach, play in the parks and take in the many shows and activities planned for these school holidays.

Here are our top 11 Brisbane school holiday activities that are worth venturing out for.

1. Get wet at Waterworld Central

Waterworld Central is Australia’s first portable water theme park and the perfect way to kick off your Brisbane school holiday. Find it from 1 April to 9 April, 2017, at Sandstone Point Hotel. The park has heaps of water-based activities and rides for kids of all ages including a giant inflatable pool, water slides and splash zones.

While entry into the park is free, you can gain full access to all the rides and zones with an Unlimited Rider Session Wristband ($10 for adults, $20 for kids).

2. Return to Hogwarts with the QSO

All Harry Potter fans will wave their wands in the air for this spellbinding Brisbane school holiday performance. Queensland Symphony Orchestra is bringing Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone to life for just two shows (so be quick). Brisbane school holiday shows are on Saturday, 1 April, 2017, at 1.30pm and 7.30pm.

3. A day of Lego play at Switch Bricks

Little Lego lovers will enjoy a trip to Switch Bricks, held at The Amare Centre Sacred Heart primary school, Booval from 6-13 April, 2017. The pop-up display and play area (including Lego-themed mini golf) runs each day. Morning sessions go from 9am until noon, while the afternoon session run from 1pm until 4pm.

4. Full steam ahead

Spend a Sunday aboard a steam train at The Workshops Rail Museum. This is a great way to see Brisbane and take a trip into history. The one hour trip operates every Sunday during the school holidays (and until December) and travels through Brisbane (departing from Roma Street station) in a historic steam train.

5. Head to the Outback (Safari)

Another fun event at The Workshops Rail Museum is their Outback Safari which will include hands-on, animal-themed activities and the exciting new exhibition A Room for Wild Animals.

The exhibition is included in the entry fee.

6. Outdoor fun with Sprouts in the Park

Spend the morning at Roma Parkland with their Sprouts in the Park program. During the school holidays, they host a wide range of activities for little ones, including art, craft and gardening fun, soccer, yoga, drama, music and dance.

7. Get personal with Paw Patrol

PAW Patrol Live! Race To The Rescue is coming to Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre for three days (three shows per day). Enjoy the musical theatre performance from 13 April to 15 April. You can add to the experience by purchasing a Meet and Greet package so your little one can meet some of his favourite Paw Patrol characters. No Brisbane school holiday should be without that!

8.  Explore the Live Large Festival

Live Large is a fun festival for Brisbane families and definitely worth a wander through. It is a free event held at the lovely South Bank Parklands. Enjoy roving entertainment, market stalls, interactive workshops, a scavenger hunt and a Liberty Swing.

9. Go wild with Wild Rangers

South Bank Parklands (Picnic Bay Island) will also host Wild Rangers’ Wildlife Experience on Thursday, 6 April from 9am to 1pm. Introduce your little ones to an array of native animals in an interactive and educational school holiday experience.

The event is free and there is no need to book in advance. Simply show up and enjoy the show.

10. Hit the museums

In addition to The Workshops Rail Museum, check out the Queensland State Museum which has a cute Investigating Creatures and Features workshop during school holidays.

For crafty kiddies, The Museum of Brisbane will host badge making for kids daily. And be sure to check out the Brisbane Planetarium’s Perfect Little Planet, a show designed to introduce little ones to the solar system.

11. Easter day out

Easter egg hunts are always fun, especially when you can let the kids run wild, have a good feed and not have to pick up thousands of pieces of leftover Easter egg wrappers.

If you’re in the North Brissy area, an Easter event not to be missed is The North Brisbane Easter Festival. It’s a free event held at Wests Mitchelton Football Field, Mitchelton Park Gaythorne on Friday, 14 April and Saturday, 15 April from 10am to 9pm.

Or check out ‘Down The Rabbit Hole Scavenger Hunt II’ which is spread out among three venues and includes crafts, games, live entertainment and more. The fun starts at Capalaba Tavern at 11am before moving to Victoria Point Tavern and ending at Redland Bay Hotel at 5pm.

The kids can sing, dance and make crafts. And you can sit, relax and drink champagne. Best Easter ever.
