how to stop head lice

Nits, nits, nits, nits, nits! Feeling itchy yet? Well, stop the phantom scratching because we’re here to help with five easy ways to stop pesky head lice invading your child’s head.

While there is no way to guarantee your kid will never ever never get nits, there are a few things you can do to minimise the risk and free your family from the drama and nuisance of head lice.

Here are four simple things you can do every day for the best defence against head lice.

1. Choose the right hairstyle

Keep long hair pulled back (in braids or a bun) to help keep head lice from making a home in your child’s hair. Having the hair tied back makes it harder for lice to crawl from one child’s head to another – the most common way that lice is spread. This is especially important when sending the kiddies to kinder, school or anywhere there are plenty of other kids (and probably lice) lurking about.

2. Spray, every single day

The easiest defence against head lice is a preventative spray. Use it daily when brushing your child’s hair in the morning and you’re in with a good chance of kicking those lice to the curb. There are plenty of DIY recipes online, but an easy option is NitWits Anti-Lice & Detangling Spray. It uses natural oils, including tea tree oil, eucalyptus oil, lavender oil and orange peel oil to repel lice from the hair. And it makes hair nice and soft too.

3. Be vigilant

Take a few minutes each week to check the kids hair for nits, especially if you know there’s an outbreak at school or kinder. If you make it part of their weekly routine – each Saturday morning after breakfast is good time – they’ll soon get used to it. Comb conditioner through hair to make it easy to spot the lice, and use a fine tooth comb to whisk them away, eggs and all.

4. Don’t be embarrassed

Education is often the best defence. Make sure kids know it’s nothing to be embarrassed about if they do get nits – some kids will get them several times a year – because the annoying little suckers don’t care if hair is clean, dirty, thick, straight, curly, wavy, black, blonde, brown or blue.

Explain that letting mum or dad plait, spray and comb their hair regularly is the best way to keep head lice away. And, if not, you can always bring up the idea of shaving their head … Just kidding!

Sometimes, even the best-laid plans go astray, which is why NitWits also have an easy all-in-one treatment which kills head lice AND their eggs in just one 20 minute treatment. Plus, the formula comes in an easy spray applicator for minimal mess and cleanup.
