Eggs recalled salmonella

Pregnant women are being urged to check their egg cartons amid a recall of eggs sold across Australia in stores including Coles and Woolworths.

Food regulators, health authorities and Chief Veterinary Officers in Australia are investigating a rare strain of Salmonella (Salmonella Enteritidis) associated with human illness and egg consumption.

Confirmed human cases linked to this strain have been found in NSW, Victoria, Queensland and Tasmania. Detections of this strain have also occurred on chicken farms in NSW, and one farm in Victoria. Biosecurity measures and other regulatory action are being applied to affected farms by the relevant authorities.

Not all eggs are impacted, but if you have purchased recalled eggs, it’s recommended the products are returned to the place of purchase for a full refund. If not returned the eggs must be discarded into the garbage, not into the garden. These eggs should not be fed to pets, or livestock.

What are the symptoms?

Symptoms of salmonella infection can be experienced between six and 72 hours after exposure and symptoms usually last for three to seven days.

Symptoms include:

  • fever
  • diarrhoea
  • vomiting
  • headaches
  • stomach cramps
  • loss of appetite

Anyone who develops these symptoms and is concerned should see their doctor, particularly young children, older people, pregnant women and people who are immunocompromised because they are at risk of more severe illness.

Although uncommon, long-term effects may occur include reactive arthritis.

This strain can be passed from person to person, however, this is more likely to occur in young children due to poor hand hygiene.
