If your milk-makers are making more liquid gold than your little boobie monster could possibly guzzle, creating breast milk soap may just be the solution. The milk doesn’t go to waste and the whole family benefits.
Grapeviner Group Member Megan shared her recipe and tips for creating soothing, lush breast milk soap, and it’s been a huge hit.
“I have hyperlactation in one breast and no supply in the other breast, so I have an abundance of breast milk at any given time,” Megan explained. “So I donate a lot to prem babies and today I got creative and made breast milk soap.”
Pictured are the two soaps Megan has made – milk and vanilla bean and milk and mint and lavender. Here’s Megan’s recipe:
How to make breast milk soap
Ingredients
- 500g soap base
- 250ml room temperature breast milk
- 6-8 drops of essential oil (you can use what you like, but lavender is lovely for sleepy-time baths)
- A pinch of herbs or dried flowers (optional)
Method
STEP 1: Melt the soap base
STEP 2:: Mix in the room temperature breast milk – you can add less if you like
STEP 3: Stir until well mixed and add any essential oils or herbs you might like in your soap
STEP 4: Pour the liquid into any shape container or mould that you wish to make your soap (we love these lotus flower moulds from GNHomeStuff).
STEP 5: Put the containers into your fridge and you should have beautiful breast milk soap after a couple of hours
STEP 1:: Megan uses a goat’s milk base so it’s gentle on bub’s skin.
Does breast milk soap go ‘off’?
Megan says the breast milk soap doesn’t go ‘off’, even though it contains breast milk.
“The soap base hardens and encapsulates the milk so it preserves it and all of its goodness. I’ve used both frozen milk – (defrosted it in a warm water bath) and fresh and there’s no difference in the soaps. It’s seriously so easy! I made 10 bars of soap while my five-month-old and two-year-old were napping.”
And here’s one last tip from our master soap maker:
“As long as you keep the ingredients you add to the soap base less than the amount of soap base itself- it will harden.”
