Griffin Autumn 2023 babe
In 2023, it seems like more baby girls made their grand entrance into the world, with 54% of families celebrating sweet daughters, while 46% were busy cuddling their bouncing baby boys. When it comes to picking names, the letter A stole the show for both girls and boys. Following closely behind with the letters E, M and L for girls, and J, M and R for boys.
Without further ado, let’s dive into the enchanting world of baby names and discover the top picks for boys and girls in 2023!
If you see a number in brackets like this (231) that indicates where the name sits on our list. For example, Elora (73) means Elora is placed 73rd most popular girls name.

The winners
It’s no surprise the name Charlotte was the most popular for Grapeviners who had little girls in 2023 as the name also topped Australia’s most popular baby names for 2023. A feminine name of French origin, Charlotte carries connotations of elegance and classic beauty, partly because of historical figures and royalty bearing the name, such as Queen Charlotte and more recently, Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.
For boys, the name Cooper took the top spot which is interesting since in 2022, the name barely made the top 50 of the Mum Grapevine top baby names. Initially a surname, Cooper is of English origin and has become popular as a first name in recent years. Its use as a first name suggests a connection to heritage or craftsmanship, evoking an image of skilled labour and artisanship.

Seasonal names like Autumn (488), Winter (173) and Summer (65) were also popular choices.

Many found inspiration in the enduring appeal of classic and vintage-inspired names. From the stately grace of William (21) and Charlotte (1) to the refined sophistication of Billy (60) and Olivia (2), there’s a reason these names have been around for as long as we can remember.
Drawing from the timeless elegance of bygone eras, names like Theodore (5), Arthur (44), Alice (68), Matilda (9) and Florence (16) were also present, bringing with them an air of nostalgia and sophistication.
Surname my name
Fallon Autumn 2023 babe
Surname-inspired names were popular among Aussie parents in 2023, reflecting a desire to honour familial ties and celebrate ancestral roots. Names like Carter (46), Parker (girls 88, boys 98), Riley (girls 64, boys 55), Sawyer (361), Fallon (85) and Harper (11) are just some of the surname-inspired names that graced our survey this year.
Gender Neutral
Darcy Spring 2023 babe
With a desire to break free from traditional gender norms and embrace inclusivity, names like Riley (girls 64, boys 55), Charlie (girls 232, boys 34), Parker (girls 88, boys 98), Cooper (girls 446, boys 1) and Darcy (girls 98, boys 47) soared in popularity.
Celebrities over the years have also embraced the gender-neutral name trend. Actress Blake Lively named her eldest daughter James, and this year the traditionally male name made our list of top girls’ names at number 231.
So whether it’s the strong, unassuming charm of Brooklyn (girls 482, boys 270) or the timeless appeal of Bailey (girls 405, boys 72), each name offers a blank canvas upon which any little one can paint their own unique identities.
Uniquely theirs
Cosette Spring 2023 babe
A delightful wave of creativity washed over the Grapeviner community, as parents sought out unique and uncommon names to bestow upon their little ones.
From Torben (427), which is Scandinavian and means “bear of Thor”, to Cosette (346) which has French roots, and gained popularity through its usage in Victor Hugo’s classic novel ‘Les Misérables’.
The name Sylvan (260) also made an appearance, derived from the Latin word “Silvanus,” who was the Roman god of forests and uncultivated land, as well as Idhika (376) which is of Sanskrit origin, primarily used in Indian languages, referring to the goddess Parvati in Hindu mythology.
Short and sweet
Eli Autumn 2023 babe
Three-letter names seemed to have surged in popularity in our 2023 baby groups, captivating parents seeking simplicity and charm for their little ones. For baby girls, the allure of succinct names like Ivy (23), Ada (67), Pia (120), Bea (317), Rue (326) and Noa (481) were popular amongst parents.
Meanwhile, for baby boys, we saw names like Leo (29), Koa (49), Eli (74) and Kai (80) emerging as favourites among parents seeking names that are both strong and distinctive. In addition to these classics, names like Tex (136), Sol (151), Van (173) and Fox (420) also gained traction among parents looking for something a bit more unconventional.
