English singer and songwriter Ellie Goulding has revealed she’s 30 weeks pregnant with her first baby.
Ellie and husband Caspar Jopling married in August 2019, with the ‘Love Me Like You Do’ singer admitting her pregnancy was a surprise. She explained she didn’t know she was expecting when she made her last major public appearance in August; a show at London’s V&A Museum.
“We did the one show. I was pregnant and had no idea,” she told Vogue. “That was (around) the time when (Caspar and I) went away briefly when we were allowed to for our one-year anniversary, and that’s basically when we found out. It was crazy because it was our one-year anniversary. That was not the plan. The thought of falling pregnant didn’t seem like it could be a reality. Becoming pregnant kind of made me feel human. I want a better word than womanly, I have curves I’ve never had before. I’m enjoying it. My husband’s enjoying it.”
Nesting during a pandemic
The couple has been waiting out the pandemic in Gloucestershire, saying they have been keeping to themselves. “We’ve been pretty good about not bending the rules because we want it to be over quicker. We are kind of in a lockdown. It’s definitely been a bizarre year, because of what’s going on with me right now.”
The 34-year-old explained that there was a quick-paced shift of mind and body when she discovered she was pregnant. “It happens really quickly, and then you almost don’t believe it at first. You’re still eating the same, looking the same, for a while I was probably in denial. I was in such a good streak of fitness.”
But she admits it wasn’t long before things changed. “I started having a completely different body and different energy, I couldn’t deal with everything! I actually went from being smug about how healthy my salads were and my breakfasts and eating nuts and seeds, and then all I wanted was McDonalds. And I was kind of terrified, I suddenly wanted all of the bad things! Whatever this baby did when it took over my body was like, ‘Hell no—I do not want broccoli, spinach, collards! I just wanted sugar and carbs’.”
No gender reveal
Ellie says she does know the gender of her baby but is keeping mum about it. “It’s not a focus for me. We found out by default because we had a scan. It wasn’t a thing. We just wanted a healthy baby and there wasn’t much more to it. Instinctively, the whole gender reveal is not my thing.”
Having released an album in July last year, Ellie says she’s looking forward to balancing motherhood and her career. “I’m excited to be a mother – but also I want to make sure that I continue to work. I can’t wait to go back on tour. I’ve been in the studio most days, I’m excited for the challenge. It will be a totally new experience.”
