Mum’s Grapevine’s Top Baby Names for 2022 have been revealed, and boy do we have a treasure trove of ah-mazing names in the diverse Grapeviner community. In fact, 5200 mums from our private Facebook Groups responded to our survey, giving us the first name of their beloved bundle of joy born in 2022.

We’ve crunched the numbers and released the whole 1417 names for boys and girls. But because this survey unearthed some gems that are a bit rarer, we’ll also be showcasing some more unique and inspirational choices in our review.

But first, we must crown the most popular names for 2022 – drum roll please… in topping the chart in first place for the girls we have Olivia (1), and for the boys, Theodore (1) wears the crown.

Interestingly, there was a very even split between genders with 51% of the respondents having boys and 49% had girls in 2022. And here’s another fascinating stat: overall, A is the most popular letter for both genders, with names starting with L, H, M, and R following close behind.

Floral names be thriving

Our Aussie obsession with nature is evident with botanical names for girls growing strong! The Grapeviner community picked beauties such as Violet (8), Ivy (17), Daisy (23), Lily (48), Poppy (63), Olive (74), Sage (85) and Holly (106).

Some of the more unique floral names that you’ve chosen include Marigold (136), Daphne (157), Dahlia (359), Iris (276), Briar (658), Azalea (221), Flora (182) and Meadow (237). Heart eyes.

Natural wonders

Nature is also an inspiration for girls with names like Aurora (9), Willow (36), Luna (67), Ocean (466), Dune (677), Sapphire (378), River (104) and Skye (222) – and even animal inspired names like Wren (142). There’s even a little Feather (718) out there.

Boy nature names read like a dream and frankly, we think perfect for the ultimate cologne! Gems include Hunter (16), Jasper (66) and Kai (67). And on the more unique side we take our hats off to: Coast (535), Cloud (411), Onyx (150), Valley (524), Everest (643) and Moss (316).

Totally unique

A great thing about the Grapeviner community is the diversity amongst our ranks! Gender neutral looks good on you

Gaining in popularity every year, names that work for both boys and girls are firm favourites among our community. The most popular unisex name was Remi (girls 7, boys 178), with Parker (girls 183, boys 25) and Riley (girls 110, boys 31) coming close behind.

Other gender-neutral names chosen were Frankie (girls 57, boys 477), Finley (girls 176, boys 79), Morgan (girls 111, boys 95), Murphy (girls 124, boys 119), Quinn (girls 66, boys 251), Sage (girls 85, boys 223) and Spencer (girls 145, boys 77).

Colours and seasons

All the colours of the rainbow, as well as months and seasons were inspiration for you this year. And we love it. The most popular colour picks were Ruby (6), Violet (8) and Hazel (14) for girls, and Navy (271, 179) for both genders. Other hues include Indigo (539), Sage (girls 85, boys 223), Peach (729) and Gray (520).

As far as seasons and months go, you loved the names Summer (64) and August (54), as well as Autumn (181), Wynter (170), Winter (girls 636, boys 437) and June (363). No April’s made the list this year, but perhaps next?

Icons and legends

The MGVfam has looked to idols, icons and legends (both real and mythical) to name their bubs. Naming after someone admired always invokes a great story to tell, and this is true for the boys in our tribe called Bowie (94), Lennox (88), Hendrix (124), Dusty (185), Ledger (234), Zepplyn (427), Orlando (122), Vance (152), Creed (253) and Nixon (161).

For girls, a great deal of inspiration was taken from goddess figures like Freya (33), Thea (93), Athena (99), Octavia (719) and Aurelia (88) as well as icons like Coco (206), Giselle (158), Gigi (185), and there’s even a little Banksi (623) about.

Regal roll call

Speaking of icons, royal baby names continue to rule. This is especially true for boys with names like Henry (2), William (6), George (20), Harry (24), Alexander (29), and Edward (32) reading as a regal roll call. Even young Sussex Archie (22) makes an appearance in the top 25.

Old school cool

A huge trend amongst the MGVfam are names that are both old world and uber cool. They may have a vintage or literary flair or be a name your grandparents are called. Whatever the inspiration, these names exude an old-school cool that we can’t get enough of. The most popular names for girls were Matilda (5), Eleanor (12), Audrey (45) and Maeve (53). And for boys, Theodore (1), Henry (2), William (6) and Lincoln (8) reigned supreme. It didn’t quite make the top 10, but Hugo (33) might just be our favourite.

Wanderlust

While place names aren’t the most popular, they’re certainly climbing up the ranks with names like Eden (girls 56, boys 527), Florence (62), Brooklyn (girls 129, boys 446), Indiana (134), London (girls 168, boys 526), Phoenix (girls 268, boys 168), Alaska (191), Dakota (121), Boston (367), Capri (518) and Byron (466). It’s not hard to see why – these names evoke memories of travel, or a place prized for its offerings.

Made you look twice

Our survey has uncovered some super cool alternative spellings for names – that made us look twice! We have: Kasper (210), Chayce (634), Klay (600), Cayden (318), Wyot (397), Harpa (588), Journi (406), Ysabella (474), Wynter (170), Alivia (275), Angelika (509) and Bridee (564) – just to name a few.

And then there are girl names that have lots of creative and cool takes like Adele (659), Addeline (298), Adelene (695), Adaline (526) and Addilyn (573). There’s also Maisey (366), Maisy (516), Maizy (348), Macie (143) and Maci (579). Office fave Ellidy (155) can also be spelled Elodie (160).

Interestingly for boys, Miles is number 51 whilst Myles follows closely at 52. Another MGV favourite Austin (60) has been spelled Austen (490) and Austyn (672).

It’s Leo, not Leonardo

There’s a trend where nickname baby names are first names in their own right. Nope, Georgie (82) is not short for Georgia, thank you very much! For boys, the most popular names are Leo (5), Sonny (26) and Max (35). And for girls we have Millie (18), Billie (11) and Ella (15).

Short, sharp and oh so sweet

The saying goes that less is more, and there’s a bevy of short and sweet names for boys. Your favourites are Finn (23), Ari (75) and Jude (92) with more unique options like Ace (403), Dash (343), Hank (166), Jax (257), Jett (72), Haze (425), Kip (656), Kit (336), Kane (205) and Tyde in there too (625).

Surnames as first names

Surname as a first name? Don’t mind if we do! Popular for a number of years, using a last name first exudes the cool-factor in spades. For boys, Harrison (12), Hudson (13), Mason (17) and Harvey (18) lead the pack. And for girls Mackenzie (43), Harriet (52) and Addison (70) are climbing the charts.

It’s in the stars

Some of the Grapeviner’s favourite names have also been pinched by a celebrity or two for their own babes. On Aussie shores, Harrison (12) was chosen by national treasure Dami Im for her son while Celia Pacquola chose Eleanor (12) for her bub with Dara Munnis. Sam and Snez of Bachelor fame added to their girl tribe with Harper (26) and celeb chef Justine Schofield had a little boy named Louis (81) earlier this year.

Former world number 1 Maria Sharapova named her first child the number one name Theodore (1), Mandy Moore gave birth to Oscar (19) and one of Ashley Graham‘s twins was bestowed the name Roman (44).

Some surprises

Sometimes you just can’t predict a trend, and the numbers have spoken. There weren’t as many Margots (464), Sloanes (730) or Scouts (girls 342, boys 677) among MGV babes this year. One thing’s for sure, they’re still firm favourites in the MGV office whether popular or not.
